There was great excitement and relief on the 20th of February at the launching of a new Maternity Waiting Home in Opuwo, Kunene Region. The Kunene Region has the lowest proportion of pregnant women delivering in health facilities and this region is presented with compounding challenges that make access to health care impossible for some rural communities. These include extreme levels of poverty, long distances to health care facilities and low health seeking behaviours. Moreover, Opuwo has the highest rates of teenage pregnancies and the lowest deliveries at facilities. In view of this dire situation, the European Union, through extending its 'Programme for Accelerating the Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality (PARMaCM)' decided to support the Namibia in funding the construction of the Opuwo Maternity Waiting Home. In his statement the Minister of Health, Hon Bernard Haufiku said: " This Project comes as a great relief to the people in Kunene". EU Ambassador to Namibia, Jana Hybaskova in turn said : "It is not only about the construction of buildings. It is about training, furnishing these buildings, putting in place equipment, purchasing ambulances to get women to health care facilities in time".
